What does this mean? (D3DError)

I've uploaded my mod to nexus so that my tester can try it, and there is a problem. At the very beginning of the mod he puts a pair of sandals in an alcove and the game crashes.

This is the error message he gets:
[string "GameMode.lua"]:0: D3DError - Present() failed: E_INVALIDARG
stack traceback:
[C]: in function 'endRender'
[string "GameMode.lua"]: in function 'update'
[string "Grimrock.lua"]: in function 'display'
[string "Grimrock.lua"]: in main chunk
I've tried several times and I can't make it crash.

Does your tester have the most up-to-date version of the game?

Does the tester have the most up-to-date graphics drivers?

He says he's up to date on both.

sounds like he either A:is not aware that v1.3.6 is the newest, (most likely), or his direct 3d drivers are out of date (less likely). What scripts/connectors are on the alcove the sandals are placed in?

The alcove starts a teleporter. No scripts involved.

I'll bump him again about that part.

We both have v1.3.7.

Hmm, okay. Is the teleporter on the party square, ie: does the crash occur when actual teleportation is supposed to happen? Or does it activate somewhere else? Or are u using a custom particle effect?

It activates somewhere else and it's not custom.

d3d error doesnt fit because he wouldnt even make it far enough to place the sandal. And you cannot reproduce the error, so it is on his side.

Ask for graphics card, driver version, directX version and LoG settings in use.
Also a savegame might help.

EDIT: ask what happens if he uses something else, not the sandals.
