I discovered one piece of information on the forums that finally allowed me to enter the cemetery after several hours. First of all, you must find the clues by opening the Archives, this post assumes you have done that already. You may be wondering which direction the Xafi desert is located - I read every item description and looked everywhere and could not find the answer to that but apparently there is a clue in Grimrock 1. In any case, you don't really need to know which direction that is since you can likely guess by trial and error. Here is a hint that will help you avoid spending hours doing the completely wrong things:
Replace "The sun was setting" With "He moved toward the sunset"
[hint only] valuable hint for cemetery gate
Re: [hint only] valuable hint for cemetery gate
Thank you. That helps a lot. I generally don't like spoilers, so I appreciate that your hint was ... just a hint.Replace "The sun was setting" With "He moved toward the sunset"
-edit- (Just putting spoiler tags on what I said. There aren't any big spoilers in there anyway; I just list a few unhelpful things that I tried. But since this is a low spoiler thread, I figure I'd tag it anyway.)

I was sure that 'the sun was setting' referred to the time of day. I spent hours trying to get the timing of my moves just right, using 'rest' and the time-piece, so that the right things happen at the right time. I tried many many different combinations; guessing which way the desert might be; reinterpreting what "looked at the path" might mean; second guessing which path "continuing on the path" referred to... I've rested out in the desert area to look for the north star, to see if there was any hint. I tried looking for the star after doing some of the other steps to see if there was some kind of feedback. I've tried dressing up my characters in various combinations of Xafi clothes. I've found a bunch of secret areas while searching for clues on how to open that cemetery gate; but it never once occurred to me that "the sun was setting" referred to a direction rather than a time of day. Because the puzzle is at a cemetery, I was quite sure that if I do everything just right then the gate would open at midnight.
