Strange issue with 60Hz refresh rate

Post by eLPuSHeR »

Hello.

I usually run LoG2 at 1440x900x75Hz resolution with Vsync on. Just because 75 divided by 2 is not an exact number I figured 60Hz would be enough/adequate for my needs.

To my astonishment running at 60Hz feels really really choppy/sluggish. FPS meter shows constant 60FPS (white) but the feeling is quite bad.

Any ideas?

My bad. I had restored a backup copy and I forgot monitor was set at 75Hz. LoG2 frame limiter was set a 60Hz. That was the reason.

Why frames must be around certain milliseconds? If I set frame limiter to 73fps for 75hz it's all good, but if I set it to 58fps for 60Hz, frame counter is red.

I don't understand either why there is still screen tearing (with vsync off) even if the frame limiter is set equal to monitor refresh rate. Why?

If the game renders 60fps for a 60Hz refresh rate there should be no screen tearing... or so I thought.

I would like to play with vsync off (to avoid input lag) but the screen tearing makes me dizzy.

Anything below 60 causes the LoG2 frame counter to go red.

Vsync off ALWAYS(!) causes screen tearing. The number of frames rendered does not matter. The moment a frame is displayed matters. To do this right and match the moment of showing a frame on screen with the displays refresh rate Vsync is required.

To prevent choppy/sluggish feel turn "Triple Buffer" on in LoG options.

Thanks Dr. Disaster.

Ater doing some tests I have reverted back to 75Hz. Everything feels smoother but not by a high margin. And of course, triple buffering turned on.

Well the difference between 60 and 75 is not really large. I heard those unfamiliar with it don't even notice the difference between 60 and 120.

btw: did you change the frame limit set inside the config file after enabling Vsync and Triple Buffer?
With Vsync on and Triple Buffer enabled you need to allow the game to render at least as much frames as your resolution permits.

According to nVidia Inspector, I have chosen 73FPS frame limiter LoG2 config file. It seems to work just fine.

Vsync On in the driver makes sure the number of frames rendered is never higher than the choosen refresh rate, beside a few small peaks here and there. Triple Buffer On in LoG options takes care of any situation where fewer frames get rendered than requested.
Together they make the frame limiter obsolete; you should not have any issues with whatever value.

For example: setting the frame limiter to 12 - deleted the 0 from the default 120 ;) - naturally makes the game quite choppy/sluggish for me but there is still no tearing.
